You're two weeks from closing on your dream home. Your credit score is 617 — just below the lender's minimum of 620. Is it too late? Maybe not. Rapid rescore might be your solution.
What Is Rapid Rescore?
Rapid rescore is a service offered through mortgage lenders that allows your credit report to be updated — and your score recalculated — within 3–5 business days, instead of waiting for the normal 30-day credit reporting cycle.
It's not a magic trick. Rapid rescore only works when there's a verifiable change that should already be reflected on your report — like a paid-down balance or a resolved dispute — but hasn't been updated yet.
When Rapid Rescore Works Best
- You've paid down a credit card balance significantly
- A collection has been paid or deleted
- A dispute has been resolved in your favor
- An error on your report has been corrected by the creditor
🏡 Rapid rescore can be the difference between qualifying and not qualifying for a mortgage — especially when your score is close to a threshold.
How It Works
- Your mortgage lender orders the rapid rescore (you cannot do this yourself)
- You provide documentation of the change (payment confirmation, deletion letter, etc.)
- The lender submits the documentation to the credit bureaus through a special rapid channel
- The bureaus update your file and recalculate your score within 3–5 days
- The lender receives your new score and can proceed with underwriting
What Rapid Rescore Cannot Do
Rapid rescore is not a dispute process and cannot:
- Remove accurate negative information
- Add tradelines that don't exist
- Fix issues that haven't actually been resolved with the creditor
- Bypass the normal dispute process for contested items
The Cost
Lenders typically charge $25–$75 per tradeline per bureau for rapid rescore. For most mortgage applicants, the cost is minimal compared to the financial impact of qualifying for a better rate — or qualifying at all.
Preparing for Rapid Rescore
If you're planning to apply for a mortgage in the next 3–6 months, work on your credit now so rapid rescore is an option if needed — not a last resort. Pay down balances, dispute any inaccuracies, and keep all documentation of payments and resolutions.
CreditGM's Mortgage Ready Plan includes rapid rescore coordination as part of your package. We work with your lender to make sure your updated credit profile is reflected before closing.
