How Long Do Collections Stay on Your Credit Report?

A collection account feels permanent — but it is not. Here is the exact timeline for how long collections stay on your report and what you can do to remove them sooner.
The 7-Year Rule
Under the FCRA, most negative items including collection accounts must be removed from your credit report 7 years after the date of first delinquency (DOFD) — the date you first missed the original payment that led to the collection. This is NOT the date the collection was opened or the date you were last contacted.
How to Calculate When a Collection Must Be Removed
Look at your credit report and find the "Date of First Delinquency" for the collection account. Add exactly 7 years. That is the date the collection must be removed. If a collection is still showing after that date, file a dispute immediately — it is a violation of the FCRA.
Important: Paying a collection does NOT reset the 7-year clock. The removal date is always based on the original date of first delinquency, regardless of payment activity after that.
How to Remove Collections Before 7 Years
Dispute errors. If any information in the collection is inaccurate — wrong amount, wrong date, wrong creditor — dispute it. Learn the dispute process.
Request debt validation. The collection agency must prove the debt is valid and that they have the right to collect it. Many older debts fail validation.
Negotiate pay-for-delete. Some collection agencies will agree to remove the account from your report in exchange for payment. Always get this in writing before paying.
