You have the legal right to dispute any inaccurate item on your credit report — for free, yourself. Here is exactly how to do it.

Step 1: Pull Your Credit Reports

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and pull your free reports from all three bureaus — Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Review each one carefully. The same error may appear on one, two, or all three reports and must be disputed separately with each.

Step 2: Identify What to Dispute

Look for: accounts you do not recognize, wrong account status, incorrect balances or credit limits, payments marked late that you made on time, accounts listed multiple times, outdated negative information past 7 years.

Step 3: Write Your Dispute Letter

Your dispute letter should include: your full name and address, your Social Security number (last 4 digits), the specific account you are disputing, why it is inaccurate, and a request to investigate and correct or remove it.

Include copies (not originals) of any supporting documents — bank statements, payment receipts, or any evidence the information is wrong.

Step 4: Send by Certified Mail

Always send disputes by certified mail with return receipt requested. This creates a paper trail and starts the 30-day clock for the bureau to investigate. You can also dispute online but certified mail provides stronger legal documentation.

Step 5: Wait and Follow Up

Bureaus must investigate within 30 days (45 days if you send additional information). They will send you the results in writing. If they verify the item, you can request the description of the procedure used and send a follow-up dispute with additional evidence.
