Bankruptcy feels like the end — but for many people, it's actually the beginning of a fresh financial start. Here's how to rebuild.

This doesn't mean your credit is ruined for 10 years. Many people qualify for credit products within 12–24 months of discharge — especially secured cards and credit builder loans.
Steps to Rebuild Right After Discharge
1. Check your credit reports immediately. Make sure all discharged debts are reported as "discharged in bankruptcy" with a $0 balance. Any account still showing a balance that was discharged is an error you can dispute.
2. Open a secured credit card. A secured card requires a deposit and reports to the bureaus just like a regular card. Use it lightly (under 30% of the limit) and pay it off every month.
3. Consider a credit builder loan. Products like Self.inc or Credit Builder Card are specifically designed to add positive installment history to your report.
4. Pay everything on time. Payment history is 35% of your FICO score. After bankruptcy, every on-time payment matters.
5. Be patient and consistent. The score impact of bankruptcy fades over time, especially if you're actively building positive history alongside it.
